The grueling, monthslong attempt to fill the North East Independent School District board’s vacant District 2 seat only seemed to magnify the factional split that kept trustees from agreeing who to appoint last fall. So voters will decide it. The special election to replace the late Terri Williams, who died last summer, joins four other NEISD contests on the May 4 ballot.

Advisory panel members harassed over NEISD’s 7th grade sex ed program But the culture war divisions and pro-parent populism that marked NEISD elections in 2022 have been toned down or avoided by candidates so far this year, including the District 2 candidates — Jacqueline Klein, Rhonda Rowland and Tracie Shelton — all of whom trustees publicly interviewed in October as finalists for the seat.
