Local sales tax measure narrowly fails

Final vote totals from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters confirm that Escondido has a new mayor, retains two incumbent City Council members and will not experience budget relief due to a three-quarter-cent sales tax.

Released Thursday, tallies show that challenger Dane White received 18,317 votes compared to 17,183 for incumbent Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara, edging a win by 1,134 ballots cast or about 3 percentage points. Joe Garcia, competing for a seat in Escondido’s newly redrawn District 2, squeaked out an even tighter win over challenger Jeff Griffith with a margin of just 257 votes.Measure E, the three-quarter-cent local sales tax increase that the current City Council put on the ballot to heal what they said is a structural budget shortfall, failed, with no’s outnumbering yes’s 18,602 to 18,155.
