White House walks back President JoeBiden’s pledge to ‘free Iran’ as Tehran hails new 'world order'

“The president was expressing our solidarity with the protesters, as he's been doing, quite frankly, from the very outset,” White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. “It's going to be — and it should be — up to the people of Iran to determine their future. And that hasn't changed.”

“The president of the United States uttered words out of distraction and said that they are looking for Iran's liberation,” Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Friday, per a semiofficial Iranian outlet. “Iran was freed 43 years ago and got out of your captivity, and we will never be your milk cow again.”The embassy takeover anniversary comes at an uncomfortable moment for the theocratic regime.

It was an unscripted moment in a sequence of remarks otherwise focused on veterans’ affairs issues and the death of his son Beau from cancer. Similarly, Biden ad-libbed a stentorian declaration that Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power” during a speech in Warsaw, Poland, earlier this year, although that appeal fit the context of his broader denunciation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. and European officials are coordinating multilateral sanctions on Iran in response to the protests."We’re inspired by the courageous young women who continue to protest across the country, almost 50 days since the killing of Mahsa Amini, despite the regime’s vicious crackdown," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday following a meeting of foreign ministers from the G-7."We’re working together to sanction those involved in the crackdown.
