After a holiday weekend where the total number of American Covid-19 deaths approached 130,000, White House officials focused on the decline in daily death rates and committed to keeping the economy open as cases mount

"In a certain way, our tremendous Testing success gives the Fake News Media all they want, CASES. In the meantime, Deaths and the all important Mortality Rate goes down," Trump wrote onWhite House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Monday also highlighted lower mortality rates as a sign of success in the administration's coronavirus response.

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Monday said there were no plans to shut the economy down again. Meadows said President Donald Trump would be willing to wear a mask in tight quarters, but said mask mandates should be a state issue.
