At least 27 American citizens have died amid the violence in Israel, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Thursday.
The number of Americans who remain unaccounted for is 14, Mr. Kirby said, a slight drop from the 17 missing as of Wednesday.
Mr. Kirby said the administration has not determined how many Americans are being held hostage by Hamas, but maintains the number is less than a handful. U.S. officials are working with Israel, Qatar and other allies in the Middle East to secure the release of hostages, according to Mr. Kirby.
