A licensed social worker, Ms. Roddy knows sometimes children just need someone to listen, as they unburden themselves from their worries – a third party, who can help them process their thoughts.
One of Ms. Donea Roddy's responsibilities at Almira Elementary includes helping children find mental health resources. Photo by John KuntzCLEVELAND, Ohio -- It has been weeks since sixth-grader Chloe ended a period of remote learning and committed to returning to Almira Elementary School for in-person classes. But she has only shown up twice.
Ms. Donea Roddy, Almira’s family support specialist through Say Yes Cleveland, wants to know more about what’s holding Chloe back. She knows Ohio’s truancy laws are strict, and she doesn’t want Chloe’s mom, Denise, to get in trouble for neglecting her daughter’s education. Say Yes Cleveland, an agency that provides scholarships and wraparound services for students in Cleveland Metropolitan School District, conducts surveys to find out what services are most needed in the schools. A survey of students at Almira between October and December of the 2022-23 school year, illuminated that need. Of the 435 surveys completed, 88 of them presented red flags, including concerns about mental and physical health, body image, housing, drug and alcohol use and food insecurity.
Some parents prefer a Spanish-speaking therapist, so Ms. Roddy has also connected families with a Lakewood-based psychologist, who speaks Spanish. She’s also worked with The Black Mental Health Corporation in Shaker Square.
