Why are pregnant women expected to wait until 12 weeks before they tell anyone they're pregnant?
Random strangers lunging hands-first at your stomach. Morning sickness. Being questioned by those with no qualifications whatsoever on whether you should still be exercising in the third trimester. Ifis a precursor to the interference all new mums experience, then these are just a few of the things I’d like to dump in the metaphorical nappy bin.
Based on the sad - and shocking - fact that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, usually before 12 weeks, this rule seems to be grounded on the premise that you wouldn’t want anyone to know you had lost a pregnancy. My female friends are my bedrock. The anchor that keeps me in place when life or my emotions are spinning out of control.
But, while I respect everyone’s choice to wait before sharing the news, it needs to be that: a choice. And at the moment, there is a lot of judgement around the decision to talk about pregnancy before the first trimester is up.
