A folk hero, a Texan Pecos Bill of sorts, he probably represents the quintessential Texan . Bigfoot’s letters home, the handwriting as graceful as a missive from one of the Founding Fathers, reveal a surprisingly literate man, an astute observer of life in early Texas.
During the Mexican War, Bigfoot served with the Texas Rangers under Capt. Jack Hays and during the Civil War guarded the Texas frontier as a private in a Confederate unit .
