SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Nynaeve’s return in The Wheel of Time season 2 breaks a major rule from both the books and TV series. In a shocking turn of events, Nynaeve was declared dead by the Aes Sedai after failing her test to become Accepted in The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 3. However, her “death” was undone by the end of the episode in yet another surprise twist.
For Nynaeve, episode 3 was a roller coaster of emotions. After thinking that she murdered Lan while in the other world, Nynaeve gave up her hope of becoming an Aes Sedai and decided to start a new life, only for the show to reveal that she never actually came back through the Arches in the first place. When Nynaeve didn’t immediately reach this realization, it appeared – to the Aes Sedai present – that she was gone for good.
Nynaeve’s Return Breaks A Rule From The Books As Sheriam said, both in the show and in the books, “the way back will come but once.” This is a strict rule, and one that the books never broke for any of the characters who used the Arches. Inexplicably, the series has gone against this by making Nynaeve the exception. Since it’s long been understood that “the way back will come but once,” there’s nothing in Wheel of Time lore that can account for Nynaeve’s return.
As for why the series opted to head in this direction, it’s worth noting that creating the false assumption that Nynaeve was lost for good lent The Wheel of Time a lot of potential for drama and huge character moments. Not only did this set up a traumatic arc for Nynaeve, but it was a heartbreaking moment for Egwene as well. It even had an impact on Liandrin, in that it seemingly set up her decision to let Mat go.
