The only known target of Israeli spyware software that reportedly exploited WhatsApp in recent weeks warns that others were likely targeted
, which has been caught up in spyware scandals in Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E. and Mexico where journalists and activists saw their iPhones infected.
After his suspicions were aroused, he contacted Citizen Lab, an organization based out of the University of Toronto, which specializes in researching digital traces left by surveillance companies. Citizen Lab investigated and believed it had found traces of NSO Group's software. Indeed, WhatsApp has received praise for contacting human rights groups to warn about the attack."WhatsApp took a really good, proactive stance on this one. They contacted human rights groups in advance, and they closed it down first with a filter and then a patch," said Citizen Lab researcher John Scott-Railton.
Eitay Mack, an Israeli lawyer who is leading the case to have NSO's export license revoked in Israel, told:"I am not bothered by this, my point of view is that the Israeli authorities monitor my activities and those of other Israeli human rights activists." He said he'd received numerous mysterious calls and messages going back years.NSO Group was founded by three Israelis, who set up the company in the late 2000s.
