While Washington is frozen by impeachment, China’s buying our chicken, F-35s are broken and a trade deal may actually happen

are supposed to feel like the moment that time stood still. Network anchors swept into town and went live with Cronkite-level sobriety. Capitol Hill televisions all tuned in, with partisans hanging on every word of State Department bureaucrats whose memory of a phone call hold the fate of Donald Trump’s presidency. The machinery of the federal government is madly at work outside of the klieg lights of the impeachment hearings.
