Joe Oldendorf faced any runner's worst fears on the trail—a bad injury, a dropping temperature, and no cell service.
When the 27-year-old went out for a 20-mile
For many trail runners who venture into remote areas on their own, this is their worst fear. But instead of panicking, Oldendorf didn’t over complicate matters. In his mind, keeping it simple would keep him alive. Once the splint was in place, Oldendorf began to crawl back on the trail. Wearing only a pair of running shorts, a long-sleeve thermal, and his Topo shoes while running, he put on the gloves and the hat that he brought with him in histo help him remain relatively warm in the roughly 50-degree temperatures. However, other problems arose.
Around 12:30 a.m., his phone dinged when a text message came through. Realizing he finally had service, he attempted to call 9-1-1. Unfortunately, the service was still too poor for a call, so he kept crawling until he found more bars. Finally, around 12:45 a.m., he was able to get ahold of a dispatcher who mobilized a rescue crew.
