It seems like there’s a form adage for everything in fitness, especially for common exercises like the squat. Keep your chest up. Put your weight in your heels. And stop the butt wink. Wait, what? If that last one threw you for a loop, you’re not alone. While the butt wink might not be in the vernacular of the everyday gym-goer, it’s a pretty popular topic on GymTok and other social platforms.
But when you butt wink, your lower back rounds, which prevents your back and core muscles from helping you perform the movement, Dr. Scantlebury says. “When your back muscles aren’t working, then you are relying on your joints and ligaments to lift, and they’re not built for that.” This can strain certain parts of your back too, Dr. Haas adds. A flexed back means you’re not able to engage your multifidus, a deep muscle that helps support, stabilize, and extend your spine, Dr. Secor says.
