The mine stabilization site at Table Head, Glace Bay. BARB SWEET/CAPE BRETON POST - Barb SweetGLACE BAY, N.S. — Out on the edge of the earth known as Table Head in Glace Bay, the icy March wind will cut you down even if it feels mild everywhere else.
But the federal government is taking action by injecting concrete and gravel into the mine voids through a series of holes drilled in the surface and dotted along a patch of ground people used to park on to go to the beach and enjoy the scenery.Stubbert, whose house is across the road, isn’t worried about subsidence.
George Stubbert, a retired miner, lives across the street from the Table Head beach in Glace Bay. BARB SWEET/CAPE BRETON POST - Barb Sweet Camera footage shot through the holes — used to identify the extent of the mine voids — show various levels of collapse, but also some much-intact shafts. Looking at the series of pipes used for the mine stabilization — which will eventually be cut down and the ground grassed over and beautified — one can’t help but marvel at the scope of the work. The pipe openings are barely saucer-sized and are being filled with concrete of different strengths or in some cases gravel depending on the specifics of the voids.
A federal government map showing the locations of mines under Table Head, Glace Bay. BARB SWEET/CAPE BRETON POST - Barb Sweet“There's quite a few people who like to walk that beach that they use in the summertime. We own the land. We have no intention of cutting off access to the beach. So the only other alternative is to make sure that it's safe access. So that's really the nature of the project is to make sure that we protect the area from any subsides.
