IU Health's new downtown hospital will feature three patient towers as well as multi-story outpatient sa

to build a new downtown health center, the focus was on shifting the balance from inpatient to outpatient care. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, reaffirmed the need for hospitals to maintain sufficient space to house the acutely ill.“The new downtown hospital will become an iconic addition to the Indianapolis skyline, representing hope and healing for future generations,” saidvice president of design and construction for IU Health in a news release.

Thursday the hospital filed two sets of plans with the Metropolitan Development Commission for review, one showing 14 floors, the other 16 floors. Both include a multi-story base that will house an outpatient center. Together the three towers can hold up to 672 private patient rooms and if necessary, IU Health could add a fourth tower to the south, IU Health officials said in a news release. A rooftop terrace and dual helipads will sit atop the facility.
