Here’s what you need to know about the exciting new Starlink internet service and how it works.

If you’ve been following the launches from SpaceX, you may have already heard about the Starlink satellite internet program.

What is Starlink? Starlink is a satellite constellation that provides broadband-level internet access. With this new service, SpaceX’s goal is to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband internet connections to parts of the planet that are traditionally underserved, like rural areas, and to theoretically offer more competitive pricing in urban spaces.

Currently, Starlink is offering their “Better Than Nothing Beta” service — a name picked to remind customers that they’re still launching satellites and occasional outages will occur. The beta test is available to customers in: Because the satellites are so much closer to Earth, they also don’t have the same large coverage area. That’s why the company needs to launch so many of these smaller satellites, which they refer to as “smallsats.”

Starlink does currently have outages from time to time, as they’re still working to increase the number of satellites they have in orbit for coverage. The biggest issue for people tends to be finding a place to set up their dish to get consistent service throughout the day. Of course, that’s why the Starlink beta phase is named “Better Than Nothing.”
