Now that Mike Lee has been reelected to a third term, can Utahns expect anything different from the Republican who rode the Tea Party wave to becoming a conservative stalwart in Congress?

Former Utah Gov. Gary Herbert backed Lee’s campaign, but acknowledged that his time in the Senate is “certainly not without controversy.”

Lee serves on the Joint Economic Committee; the Senate Judiciary Committee; the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee; the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation; and the Senate Special Committee on Aging. He is also the senior member of Utah’s congressional delegation. Ben McAdams, a former Democratic congressman from Utah who was one of McMullin’s most ardent supporters, echoed that sentiment.

In the last year, all members of Utah’s congressional delegation, except Lee, introduced legislation pertaining to the Great Salt Lake. Lee did, however,, sponsored by Romney in the Senate, and Utah Reps. Chris Stewart, John Curtis and Burgess Owens in the House. The degree to which that’s necessary depends on which party wins control of the Senate. As of Thursday afternoon, races in Arizona and Nevada had not yet been called, and Georgia’s Senate race is heading to a runoff.

McMullin loss in Utah raises independent candidacy questionsMcMullin loss in Utah raises independent candidacy questionsUtah Democrats' decision to back an independent rather than nominate a member of their own party to take on Republican Mike Lee transformed the state's U.S. Senate race from foregone conclusion to closely watched slugfest. Independent Evan McMullin, an anti-Trump former Republican best known for his longshot 2016 presidential bid, attracted millions in outside spending in his campaign against Lee. Ultimately, though, it wasn't even close. Lee is on his way to a double-digit win.
