San Diego State scores a pair of 14-yard touchdowns to start workout, with quarterback Jalen Mayden tossing two TD passes on first two possessions

If this is how San Diego State’s offense is going to look under new OC Ryan Lindley, then this is what Aztecs fans will say: “Yes, please.”

To show it wasn’t a fluke, Mayden and Co. came right back on the next possession, moved methodically downfield and scored on another 14-yard pass, this one to wide receiver Phillippe Wesley II. The offensive line — with redshirt sophomore Christian Jones, junior Cade Bennett, sophomore Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli, junior Dean Abdullah and sophomore transfer Myles Murao starting from tackle to tackle — performed well in its initial audition. The defense did have its day on the scrimmage’s third drive, when backup quarterback Kyle Crum dropped back and had the ball slip from his grasp before he could throw it.

The second quarter was much less eventful, though the defense stepped up again with a minute remaining in the half when cornerback Noah Tumblin jumped a sideline route, intercepted a Crum pass and returned it 10-yards for another defensive score. The first string offense did return late in the third quarter for a series that again included Mayden throwing a deep ball to Penny. This one was a sideline route that the receiver batted at over the defender but could not haul in.
