The U.S. Federal Elections Commission also wants to know why local party officials apparently accepted donations that exceed campaign limits.
Federal elections regulators are demanding an explanation from the Republican Party of San Diego County for reporting a negative cash balance of thousands of dollars on its most recent monthly financial statement.
“It’s a giant nothing-burger,” Executive Director Jerry Sirotnak told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “The letter you sent to us is a fact-finding request.” “This suggests that you have overdrawn your account, made a mathematical error or incurred a debt,” an FEC senior campaign finance and reviewing analyst wrote.“Please file an amendment to your report to accurately disclose your financial activities,” the FEC wrote.
“If any contribution you received exceeds the limits, you may have to refund the excessive amount,” the FEC said.
