'A lot of people didn’t think it was possible, but I have done it' - A Utah mom received a national award for her work to rescue hundreds of abandoned ducks and geese. JFRANCHIREPORTS
WEBER COUNTY, Utah — A woman who has dedicated two years of her life to saving abandoned ducks has received a national honor.
Smith has rescued more than 400 fowl from ponds and lakes in Utah. Many of those birds were likely domesticated pets that were abandoned by humans. She said domestic ducks don’t have the ability to fly and lack the instincts to hunt for food or protect themselves. She has also worked with local governments to save domestic ducks and to install signs near ponds warning people it is illegal to abandon waterfowl.
