The NASAWebb Telescope 🔭 — which Huntsville's NASA_Marshall Space Flight Center had a hand in building — has taken the clearest pictures of Neptune’s rings in more than 30 years. The telescope also captured seven of the distant planet’s 13 moons. 🪐
This image of Neptune released by NASA in September of 2022 shows Neptune and seven of its known moons: Galatea, Naiad, Thalassa, Despina, Proteus, Larissa, and Triton. Dominating the picture, except for the planet itself, is Triton in the upper left. The light "defraction spikes" seen around the moon are becoming a signature of Webb images.
Neptune as captured by Webb's Near-Infrared Camera that "sees" objects in the near-infrared range. That means those objects don't look blue. Surrounding the planet are seven of its moons.
