Let’s start off by making something clear: Despite their name, ice volcanoes are not, actually, volcanoes. They are not hydrothermal. They don’t erupt with lava. But even if ice volcanoes aren’t really volcanoes, they are still pretty incredible., causing an increase in pressure on the ice sheet. Eventually, this pressure punctures a hole through the ice, allowing water to spray up through it. If the air temperature is cold enough, the spray freezes, slowly building the ice volcano cone.
