We tried budget instant porridge from Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Sainsburys to see how they compared
Nothing quite motivates those early rises out of toasty warm sheets than a hot breakfast- or a hot drink of course. Porridge is something you either see as a hearty, wholesome breakfast or a sloppy, lumpy meal you're forced to eat.
But when buying a box of 10 sachets for nearly £3 and having to use minutes of energy time to cook it, some people will have started to find other options instead. The cost of living crisis has stretched budgets to the max and during an already trying winter this year, the last thing that you want burning a hole in your pockets is boxes of breakfast.
The oats- or oat powder -looked nothing like the household classic which was in itself a red flag. However, that red turned to green once it was cooked, the saying don't judge a book by its cover proved true in this instance. Midway through cooking I added more milk and popped it again to be cooked for longer but I felt as if this made it worse. Then end result was a tasteless, lumpy and stodgy mess and honestly I couldn't stomach it.
I was half convinced I'd bought the wrong type of porridge and that I shouldn't have microwaved it, but cooked it over a stove instead. But after a quick scan of the box I found I was right in microwaving it, it just had a bit of a unappealing texture.Like Sainsbury's, Aldi's version of quick oats needed two minutes in the microwave. I thought I was in for another chewy bowl of porridge but this time the half broken oats were back.
