But Rivas has no previous experience in city government, either as an elected official or appointee, and very little community involvement. Lynne’s understanding of issues pressing against Farmers Branch, most notably a shortage of police officers, goes beyond conceptual and is granular. This is especially valuable because the city has a new police chief and city manager.
Our support for Lynne, however, is not without some hesitancy. Lynne has been at the center of some disappointing political tension over the years. One of those ordinances required renters to show proof of lawful immigration status to landlords and was blocked by federal courts during years of litigation. The city’s stance drew national attention, and Farmers Branch was dubbed mean-spirited and racist.
