, first by trying to raise money from other governments, such as Saudi Arabia, to continue buying weapons for the Contras. These two issues, half a world apart, intersected after the Reagan administration decided to proceed covertly and illegally with both objectives. An exiled Iranian arms dealer named Manucher GhorbanifarIran, and further alleged that weapons sales would improve that faction’s standing. Ghorbanifar collaborated with Israel, which proved to be an important intermediary.
against Ghorbanifar and warned that he was not to be trusted, the Israeli and U.S. governments decided to do so anyway. Beginning in 1985, Ghorbanifar passed American-made weapons to Iran through Israel, with the National Security Council overseeing the sales. This happened with the knowledge of Reagan and his advisors,. William Francis Buckley, a CIA station chief in Beirut, was kidnapped in 1984, and Reagan kept the program going to try and secure his release.
Colonel Oliver North, a military aide to the NSC, then made an important proposal: Sell the weapons directly to the Iranians and divert some of the money to support the Contras. The plan was authorized and the weapons sales continued in 1986, with the funds used to establish a private organization that funneled money to the Contras.
