NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – The Northside Community Civic Centre Society board of directors say they’re no longer in a financial position to keep the Emera Centre ...

The Northside Community Civic Centre Society, a volunteer board that runs the Emera Centre Northside, has recommended that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality take over the facility. The Emera Centre Northside opened in April 2011. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST.NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – The Northside Community Civic Centre Society board of directors say they’re no longer in a financial position to keep the Emera Centre Northside open under their guidance beyond this winter.

“Our power bills have gone up 40 per cent in the last 10 years,” he said, noting the venue spends around $220,000 each year on power. “Hopefully, if budget discussions are in April, we’re expecting a final decision no later than the end of April. If that’s the case, as quickly as possible after that we’d like to start the process of turning the building over.”

“That was done when we were forecasting a decline in population and not an increase,” said MacMullin, who was one of several councillors, including Gordon MacDonald and Cyril MacDonald, who were in attendance for the meeting. When asked, the majority of people in attendance agreed the municipality taking over the venue would be the best situation moving forward.“The purpose of the meeting is to keep it open for the next 25 to 50 years and have it maintained the way it has to be maintained,” said Wilkie, noting the efforts of community members, who fundraised the money to help build the facility.

“What I can tell you, CBRM already operates arenas – Centre 200, Cape Breton County Recreation Centre and Miners Forum – it’s not new to them,” said MacMullin, who noted it would still be a “community” venue even if the municipality took control of it. “If there is anything over and above, we’re happy to share, but at the end of the day, we hope the needs of the Northside are primary in the minds of the people who are making the decisions.”

“Knowing the way rinks work, I know Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association is in Glace Bay and Northside and District Minor Hockey Association is going to be in North Sydney,” said Wilkie. If the municipality was to take over the building, CBRM is a unionized work environment and employees at the facility would have to be unionized.
