During the last few months, GLITSInc (Gays and Lesbians Living in a Transgender Society) has raised over $1 million to go toward opening housing and social services centers in NYC for the Black trans community, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

Indeed, Doroshow has been fighting her entire life, including experiencing homelessness in New York . Doroshow has been a sex worker and a performer, but beyond every success and every obstacle she’s faced, advocacy for her trans family has always been her core focus. Doroshow has been doing advocacy work for more than 30 years, working with various social-service organizations all over New York. She founded G.L.I.T.S.

“There is a general problem when it comes to equity and trans people, people of color, Black trans women,” Doroshow explained over the phone earlier this week. “There’s a problem when you’re trying to sustain and trying to live. For example, your landlord has the right to discriminate against you, and you can’t prove discrimination. It’s hard to prove discrimination. So once again, you’re abandoned by a system and by a community.
