worsened and I had to be fitted with an ileostomy bag. How it works is the intestine is rerouted through a small opening in the abdominal wall which directs the stool into a plastic bag, secured between my belly button and right hip. My initial, freaked-out response was: How is this even a human option? But, at the same time, I was grateful for the ostomy bag. It not only saved me from further suffering, it also saved my life.
Faced with having to tell my boss about my bowel activity, I felt humiliated and angry. This is my business. If there wasn’t any stigma about poop I could have When I was younger and more self-conscious, mortified by my bathroom needs, I felt disgusting, and fearedpeople thinking I was disgusting. It was isolating and embarrassing. I’ve had a lot of practice now and I find that when I share directly, and with humor, in a matter-of-fact manner, people react in kind. The trauma was, in fact, much bigger in my mind than in reality.
