JOHN'S, N.L. — Albin Jose Toms, owner and operator of Black Cat Pizzeria in St. John's, is closing his doors – for now.Black Cat Pizzeria has been operating at the Newfoundland Donut Company's location at 59 Harvey Rd. for the past 10 months, but the pizza place is closing due to operational challenges.Black Cat Pizzeria serves up Detroit-style pizza with a sourdough crust. - ContributedJose Toms, a mechanical engineering student from India, arrived in St. John's in 2017.

This idea piqued the interest of Terre, which operates out of the ALT Hotel. It was there that Black Cat Pizzeria began offering its pizzas once a week, and Jose Toms said it was an immediate hit in the community.A healthier option Jose Toms believes what sets Black Cat Pizzeria apart is that they offer healthier pizza options, which lies in their choice of sourdough as the foundation for their pizzas.

"I believe in providing the best. Sometimes that means taking a step back to make necessary improvements."Jose Toms hopes to keep the essence of Black Cat within the downtown area and says he's currently in talks to sign a lease this week for a new location.
