Most households either discuss when is best to take down the Christmas tree and decorations or follow a tradition. Having a real tree vs an artificial one can make a difference, as the real tree make look a little past its best after a while, but keeping the Christmas cheer going for longer is also a valid reason. It's believed that keeping your decorations on display for too long after the Twelfth Night can bring bad luck.
