The White House on Monday lauded Saudi Arabia's pledge to send $400 million in humanitarian assistance to war-torn Ukraine, calling the commitment 'an important one' a year after Russia launched its invasion.
“We are glad to see it,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council.
The announcement of $400 million in energy, infrastructure and financial assistance came Sunday as Saudi Arabia’s minister of foreign affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, led a delegation to Kyiv for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the presidential residence. The prince also met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy's chief of staff. The meeting was the first ministerial visit by an Araba state since the war in Ukraine began.
The agreement will result in the delivery of generators and badly needed energy products and supplies, Kirby said.Michael Collins covers the White House. Follow him on Twitter @mcollinsNEWS.
