Waukegan native Jocelyn Zamudio and Grant Kennedy Lewis star as teenagers who were brought to America as children in Martyna Majok’s “Sanctuary City,” presented Sept. 14-Nov. 18 at Steppenwolf Theatre.
Director Steph Paul said that in casting the role of G, “I was looking for an actor who was able to access fireworks and electricity. I think that G is somebody that lives in high-definition color, is very vibrant, does not fade. I needed somebody that could access that boldness.”“Jocelyn is all of the above,” the director declared. “Such a stunning actor and a lovely human to be in a room with.”
“I was part of a group that convened at an old church in North Chicago,” she related. In addition to doing theater, it was a place where kids could learn Mexican folkloric dances.“We would have performances all over Lake County,” Zamudio recalled. “It was a group of adults teaching us and a lot of young kids in our productions. I remember playing Little Red Riding Hood in one production. It was a large chunk of my early childhood that got my feet wet for theater and my love for it.
