The Environment Agency declined to prosecute the country’s largest water company for polluting a river because the incident wouldn’t cause any “lasting damage” 💧 SteveRobson04 reports

Matt Marlow, chair of the River Anglers Conservation Group, contacted the agency after witnessing what appeared to be raw sewage being pumped into the River Mersey in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

But six months later, an official said the case was being dropped, despite confirming it was a pollution offence. A spokesperson said: “In this instance, United Utilities did cause the pollution on the River Mersey. “I feel angry, it was clear to me that the EA was saying ‘this is a pollution incident’ so why haven’t they prosecuted?“I think it definitely puts people off reporting incidents – it’s been going on for so long and after a while you think ‘what’s the point?'”
