WATCH: Biden joins Buttigieg at 150-year-old tunnel to tout infrastructure investments
The Baltimore & Potomac Tunnel has been used since the Reconstruction Era to transport those traveling from New York all the way to Washington, D.C. The double-tracked arch tunnel has long been used by Amtrak and MARC trains, with roughly 140 trains passing through each day.
However, the tunnel has hampered travelers in recent years as it requires trains to slow to 30 mph to venture safely past its curves, causing severe delays. Transportation officials have sought for years to replace the structure, but they have been stalled due to a lack of funding.Biden and Buttigieg are set to meet with Amtrak officials and Gov. Wes Moore to tout the president's infrastructure bill and how it will be used to revitalize the tunnel.
