More than a quarter of a million tags are distributed to thousands of volunteers across North America who tag monarchs as they migrate through their area.
“Somebody saw our butterfly down in Cape May and they took a picture of it,” Novobilsky said. “That was cool to see that.
“We’re just trying to educate people. Monarchs are definitely threatened with loss of habitat, loss of their host plant, which is milkweed.” Their work dovetails nicely for the monarchs since Novobilsky raises them and Allen grows the milkweed, the only food that newly-hatched caterpillars will eat, and whose leaves are the only place female monarchs will lay their eggs.
