Linebacker Christian Harris went with the 75th pick to the Houston Texans in the third round following second-round picks John Metchie and Phidarian Mathis.
The streak of Alabama defensive linemen drafted reached seven years when Phidarian Mathis heard his name called Friday night.
The Washington Commanders took Mathis with the 47th overall pick in the second round to continue the Tide defensive line streak that began when A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed were picked in the second round of the 2016 draft. He joins a Washington defensive line that includes two of those former Crimson Tide stars Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.A permanent captain from the 2021 Crimson Tide, Mathis finished with 53 tackles -- 12 of which were for a loss including nine sacks. He also forced one fumble and recovered two others as an emotional leader for the full Alabama locker room.
The last five Alabama defensive linemen have become starters and impact players. Christian Barmore, picked 38th last year in the second round by the Patriots, made 46 tackles as a rookie with 1.5 sacks. Barmore, a Wisner, Louisiana product, had one of his biggest games last year against LSU. He had a career-high nine stops with a sack, three quarterback hurries and a recovered fumble. Then against Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl semifinal, Mathis had a pair of tackles for loss including a sack in the convincing defensive performance against the Bearcats.Michael Casagrande is a reporter for the Alabama Media Group.
