Former union leader says lawsuit by OPSEU is part of political campaign against him, statement of defence says
he headed for almost 15 years is politically motivated and began after he appeared alongside Premier Doug Ford in support of the government’s move to boost the minimum wage, according to court documents.
“The politicized faction was incensed that Mr. Thomas would appear with Mr. Ford on stage” in November 2021 to tout the $15-an-hour minimum wage, the statement of defence says. In January, OPSEU launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Thomas and former vice-president and treasurer Eduardo Almeida and former financial services administrator Maurice Gabay.
In a statement released Monday, current OPSEU President JP Hornick and first vice-president/treasurer Laurie Nancekivell said while Thomas’ statement of defence “is a normal legal procedure and the next step towards our lawsuit,” that “we would classify Mr. Thomas’s defence and counterclaim as fiction at best.
Gabay, a former tax auditor for the Ontario government, worked for OPSEU starting in 2008 and was fired from his position as administrator of the financial services division last April, the statement of claim says.
