The upcoming Walgreens closure marks the end of yet another store in San Francisco’s Union Square.
The Walgreens at the corner of Powell and Sutter streets in San Francisco’s Union Square is closing next month, according to a sign posted near the store’s entrance earlier this week. The store will close by 3 p.m. on Nov. 15, the sign reads. The closure comes amid a slew of other pharmacy closures across the state: Rite Aid announced earlier this week that it is closing 154 stores, including 31 in California, following the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
The company previously cited retail theft and a need for cost-cutting measures as reasons for recent closures. The store’s closure follows those of several retail establishments around Union Square, including Express, Anthropologie, Gap and CB2. Walgreens currently has 45 stores in San Francisco, according to the company’s website. The closest Walgreens to the affected location is at 135 Powell St.
