The death of Chadwick Boseman looms large over the meandering Marvel sequel
” even exists is an accomplishment its own right. It’s a fine film and pays tribute to Boseman beautifully throughout the movie. But without its titular star, “Wakanda Forever” feels unbalanced and never reaches the soaring heights of its predecessor.
While Coogler rather deftly weaves the story of how Wakanda grapples with the loss of its king and protector, the film meanders at a bloated two hours and 41 minutes — 11 minutes longer than the massive “Avengers” crossover event “Infinity War” — and the overstuffed story drags at times. In many ways Queen Ramonda is the emotional heartbeat of the film, with Angela Bassett conveying the family’s pain and anguish in heartbreaking and powerful fashion. Winston Duke is hilarious and heartfelt as M’Baku, as the Jabari tribe no longer outcasts in Wakanda.
