The process now involves a two-test evaluation of a recruit’s mental wellness and ability to deal with the stressors of the job. The results are looked at by a psychological who then conducts a one-on-one interview with every candidate and provides a report on that and the test results. The VPD says it uses a provincial learning strategy outlined by guidelines set out by the solicitor general.
All senior officers are trained in critical incident management, conflict resolution and respectful, professional workplaces, and have other professional development opportunities on offer. The VPD is also developing further training for anyone hoping to become an inspector.Human resource or peer support representative for anyone with mental health issues:
An employee wellness unit provides confidential peer support, debriefing and stress education and referrals for both employees and their families. Since 2019, those units have seen staff increases, including a doubling of the size of the employee relations unit to allow smaller caseloads and more support.VPD human resources has expanded its psychological supports through the above units.
The existing respectful workplace policy is in the midst of a full review and is expected to be implemented later this year with the inclusion of rumours and gossip as unprofessional behaviour.HR officers are offered leadership conferences and courses, and some of them are civilians with specialized HR training that’s shared with other officers. Expanding that training is in the works.
