Low carbon energy solutions are the focus for Vopak Terminal Los Angeles in Wilmington.

It’s time to move quickly with what’s available in lower-emission alternatives, rather than waiting on zero-emission technology, because the former can make a short-term difference in cleaning up the environment while the latter technology develops, representatives with Vopak Terminal Los Angeles said on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

A long-term agreement with Neste, the world’s leading producer of SAF and renewable diesel, is designed to join the push for California’s energy transition, officials said at a Wednesday news conference. Large and small airports, including Los Angeles International, are among the largest customers that will receive the cleaner fuels via a pipeline from the Vopak terminal on Canal Street, not far from Banning’s Landing and the ongoing work being done on Wilmington’s new waterfront.

Electromagnetic field-assisted thermal catalysis enabling low-temperature, low-pressure, large-scale ammonia synthesisElectromagnetic field-assisted thermal catalysis enabling low-temperature, low-pressure, large-scale ammonia synthesisAmmonia (NH3), as one of the most common industrial chemicals, is essential for nitrogenous fertilizer production and shows potential as a next-generation green fuel. Industrial ammonia synthesis relies on the reaction of fossil fuel-derived hydrogen and nitrogen (Haber-Bosch method) under high temperature (~500 °C) and high pressure (|15 MPa), which consumes ∼2% of global power and discharges ∼1.5% of global greenhouse gas.
