The Israeli armed forces are clearly mounting a massive assault on Gaza to destroy Hamas and put at risk the lives of over two million Palestinian civilians.
I have read some interesting chapters on deadly conflict there in the period before, during and after the Second World War. That era seemed marked by “foreign intervention,” or perhaps frank colonial rule. In coming days we again will see sympathy for the sufferers expressed and negated by forms of national self-interest.
Looking at the public spaces of our city, I see an increasing abundance of weeds several feet high growing on roadsides. Cracks in the roadways fill with unswept dirt, which then sprouts weeds, again as much as several feet high. Long sections of boulevard that used to be neatly mowed grass have become unchecked seas of weeds. Boulevard concrete curbs where they meet the road have disappeared completely under a thick cover of weeds.
