Dulanda Saintcyr who, at 18, has served as president of the Youth Council of the Stafford County NAACP for three years, said her activism was particularly influenced by the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin. “That was really my first experience with the nation’s race relations,” she recalled. And the significance of that fight is not lost on the national party. Democrats in Virginia have raised $31.8 million, nearly double their totals for the last “off-off year” election in 2015, and the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee has committed $1 million to candidates in the state.
