Canada had 874 homicides last year, a fourth consecutive rise year on year
Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index, which measures police-reported crime, was up four per cent overall last year.a five-per-cent increase in 2022, following a six-per-cent increase in 2021. The 531,243 violent incidents reported in 2022 are a 39-per-cent increase over the 382,115 reported in 2015, when a nine-year downward trend in violent crime began to reverse.
The data, released Thursday, show crimes involving the use of firearms in a threatening or violent manner in 2022 were up for the eighth consecutive year, four-per-cent higher than 2021, and are 60 per cent higher than they were 2013.
