Former Detroit Pistons guard and current Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups will join Vince Carter in the 2024 Hall of Fame Class.
Dallas Mavericks guard Vince Carter beats his chest and acknowledges the cheers from the crowd as he walks off the court following his game winning three pointer against the San Antonio Spurs in1 the NBA Western Conference Quarterfinals Game 3 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, Saturday, April 26, 2014. The Mavericks won, 109-108.Vince Carter, the eight-time All-Star who spent three seasons with the Mavericks, was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday.
The 13-member class inducted Saturday includes former Detroit Pistons guard and current Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former Lakers, Grizzlies and Warriors executive Jerry West, who was already inducted as a player and as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic team. Also in the class: players Seimone Augustus, Michael Cooper, Walter Davis, Dick Barnett and Michele Timms, coaches Charles Smith, Harley Redin and Bo Ryan, broadcaster/coach Doug Collins and owner Herb Simon.
Carter entered the league in 1998 as the fifth overall pick out of North Carolina. He sparked a wave of “Vinsanity” in Toronto, where his high-flying style made him one of the league’s top players. He began a run of 10 straight seasons in which he averaged more than 20 points a game. Carter was dealt to New Jersey in a blockbuster trade early in the 2004-05 and spent nearly five seasons with the Nets. After that, he bounced around to Orlando, Phoenix, Dallas, Memphis and Sacramento before landing in Atlanta.Carter’s crowning jewel, of course, was his explosive, gravity-defying performance in the 2000 NBA dunk contest. The 360-windmill, the between-the-legs jam, and the infamous “honey-dip” dunk still live in NBA All-Star Weekend lore.
