Let Viktor & Rolf’s surreal fall 2005 runway provide you with a fresh dose of fashion escapism.

This story is part of a series, Past/Present, highlighting images and articles from Vogue that have personal significance to our editors.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many people are sharing stories of not being able to sleep. I’m having the exact opposite problem. All I can do is drift off, doze, nod, nap, and slink into a subconscious state. I’ve always been a good sleeper, having slept uninterrupted through entire days of high school, a few important college exams, exactly one day of work at, and most recently a middle-of-the-night fire alarm at our hotel in Paris. I dip off into R.E.M.

If I don’t refresh the New York Times homepage one more time I might miss a crucial bit of information that could save my life! Earlier this week I was reminded of Viktor & Rolf’s fall 2005 show of duvet-gowns as I did some research about blanket dressing. Held in Paris in March of 2005, the runway presentation was scored by Tori Amos—who I imagine lives in a perennial state of dreaminess—and included bias-draped dresses made to look like satin bedsheets and pillows strapped to the backs of models’ heads.
