THUNDER BAY – A quick-thinking police officer may have saved the life of a pedestrian not paying attention to where they were walking.
According a media release issued on Thursday afternoon, an on-duty officer observed a pedestrian set to walk into traffic on the Harbour Expressway. The pedestrian, shown in video supplied by police, appeared to be unaware they were crossing on a red light and into the path of fast-moving vehicles on the busy highway.
Unable to stop traffic, the officer instead turned on his cruiser siren, which caught the attention of the pedestrian, averting disaster. An alert motorist also played a role, swerving and coming to a stop just beyond the crosswalk, also ensuring the pedestrian, whose toque was obscuring their vision, walked away safely.Police said it’s not uncommon for both motorists and pedestrians to lose focus as winter comes to an end, either from not having to negotiate icy sidewalks and cross walks or speedier driving on roads not covered in snow and ice.
