At the AI Safety Summit in England, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced the creation of the United States AI Safety Institute.
, Harris announced “a half dozen more machine learning initiatives that the administration is undertaking” on Tuesday at the AI Safety Summit in England.
The Biden-Harris Administration, through the Department of Commerce, is establishing the United States AI Safety Institute inside NIST. The US AISI will operationalize NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework by creating guidelines, tools, benchmarks, and best practices for evaluating and mitigating dangerous capabilities and conducting evaluations including red-teaming to identify and mitigate AI risk.
Vice President Harris added, “Just as AI has the potential to do profound good, it also has the potential to cause profound harm, from AI-enabled cyber-attacks at a scale beyond anything we have seen before to AI-formulated bioweapons that could endanger the lives of millions.” The United States AI Safety Institute will be established in cooperation with the Department of Commerce.reports that Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said today in a speech at the AI Safety Summit, “I will almost certainly be calling on many of you in the audience who are in academia and industry to be part of this consortium,” emphasizing that the private sector must be involved in any assessment, management, and regulation of AI technologies.
