Vestavia Hills parents file a lawsuit over school COVID decision process.

The lawsuit states, however, that instead of receiving the information, the plaintiffs instead were given copies of the superintendent’s weekly updates sent to every parent. It further alleges that although multiple parties requested unique information from the board regarding their COVID policies, everyone was given “identical packets of documents.”

At its core, the lawsuit says that the defendants failed to be transparent in providing the district’s decision-making process “on matters of significant public importance.” The plaintiffs asked a local judge to require that school officials fully comply with all open records requests.“What I hope the city and parents get out of this lawsuit lies in the future,” Malcom said in an interview.

Since the beginning of this school year, parents have filed lawsuits in Homewood, Madison City, Huntsville and Cullman City in an effort to overturn mask requirements. The Cullman, Homewood andThis is the first lawsuit filed in a district with a mask-optional policy in the state. Freeman and the Board of Education’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment at time of writing.
