Is Vladimir Putin’s Russia going to take over Ukraine and keep going? This is the question many of us have asked recently, writes Velida Kent, a Crimean Tatar American who lived in Ukraine for five years.

A woman holds a sleeping child as Ukrainian refugees wait for further transportation at the railway station in Przemysl, Poland, on March 17, 2022.

Perched in Przemysl in eastern Poland near the border with Ukraine, I am surrounded by a torrent of women and children passing through — mothers, grandmothers, aunts and nieces. Three million in three weeks, a refugee outflow unprecedented in speed and scope, most exiting through Poland, with Przemysl the hub.

For some friends who have no place to go, I work through friends of friends to find hosts and places to live indefinitely — in Poland, Germany, Spain, Portugal. For others, the helping hand is more transitory — a hotel room or Airbnb for a night or two in southern Poland for them to have a bed, a hot shower and a meal after perilous journeys, and tickets to onward destinations. For some, it is just simple advice on how to get to where they want to go.

Amalia, a barista who first fled occupied Donetsk for Kharkiv in 2014 because, she said, “I am Ukrainian, and Ukrainians need to live in freedom,” and befriended my daughter in Kyiv, spent two days with us in Przemysl but is now settling in Portugal. Svitlana, my daughter’s Kyiv landlady, and her young grandkids are on their way to Valencia, Spain, with a group of Catholic monks.
